Vascular Lesions

Vascular lesions are abnormalities of the blood vessels that appear on the skin's surface. These can manifest as red, purple, or bluish marks and are often the result of dilated, broken, or malformed blood vessels. While most vascular lesions are benign, they can be cosmetically concerning and, in some cases, symptomatic or indicative of an underlying condition. Common areas affected include the face, neck, and legs.

Vascular lesions are categorised based on their appearance and underlying vascular abnormalities

Telangiectasia

Small, dilated blood vessels that appear as red or purple lines, often on the face or legs.

Spider Angiomas

Central red spots with radiating blood vessels, resembling a spider web.

Port-Wine Stains

Flat, reddish-purple patches present at birth, typically due to malformed capillaries.

Cherry Angiomas

Small, round, red bumps caused by an overgrowth of blood vessels.

Hemangiomas

Benign growths of blood vessels, often raised and red, common in infants.

Venous Lakes

Bluish-purple compressible lesions, typically found on sun-exposed areas like the lips or ears.

The development of vascular lesions can result from a variety of factors, including:

  • Genetics

A family history of vascular lesions increases susceptibility.

  • Sun Exposure

UV radiation weakens blood vessels, leading to telangiectasia and other lesions.

  • Aging

Natural thinning of the skin and blood vessels can contribute to vascular lesions.

  • Hormonal Changes

Pregnancy, birth control pills, or hormonal imbalances may lead to spider angiomas or other vascular changes.

  • Skin Trauma or Irritation

Frequent rubbing, injury, or skin conditions like rosacea can result in visible blood vessels.

  • Medical Conditions

Disorders such as liver disease or systemic vascular anomalies may be associated with vascular lesions.

Effective treatment for vascular lesions depends on the type, size, and location of the lesion. Modern dermatological technologies offer excellent results with minimal downtime.

  • Pulse Dye Laser (Candela V Beam Prima PDL): Delivers targeted pulses of light to selectively heat and destroy abnormal blood vessels while preserving surrounding skin.
  • Long Pulse Nd:YAG (Candela Nordlys): Penetrates deeper into the skin to treat larger or deeper vascular lesions, such as venous lakes or blue veins.
  • Intense Pulsed Light (Candela Nordlys IPL): Emits broad-spectrum light to target and reduce redness and superficial vascular lesions.
  • Combination Therapies: For optimal results, combining treatments like PDL and Nordlys Nd:YAG (+/- IPL) can address both superficial and deep lesions effectively.

Vascular lesions can be effectively treated using advanced technologies like PDL and IPL. Schedule a consultation at KDAA to determine the most suitable treatment plan for your specific concerns.
