Why do I have eye bags?

What causes under-eye bags: whether due to aging, sun damage, genetics, fluid retention, or lifestyle factors such as smoking and vaping, eyebags are due to changes in the skin and its supporting tissue structures (loss of collagen and elastin), resulting in the protrusion of the underlying fat pads. This results in the ‘sagging hammock’ change that occurs below the eyes.
Is there a difference between eye bags and festoons?
Eye bags form directly below the eye due to skin laxity while festoons develop beneath the eyebags and effect the area above the cheekbone. Festoons are similarly due to laxity of the skin and its supporting structures (ligaments and deep fat pads) resulting in the associated drooping of the superficial fat layer to give a tired, drawn look.
Best treatment for under-eye bags and festoons
A combination treatment approach and/or utilising treatments that target the skin and the deeper supporting layers and structures should be considered.
Eye bag and festoon treatment options
Dermal Healers and injections
REJURAN
Rejuran is a polynucleotide (PN) injection that has regenerative properties and can be used to target the skin, fat and supporting structures. Rejuran can help improve eye bags by stimulating collagen production and improving skin elasticity, resulting in a firmer under-eye area helping to reduce the appearance of eye bags.
Rejuran is utilized for early eyebags and maintenance treatment or in mild to moderate eyebags in combination with laser or with RF microneedling.
In line with the latest TGA guidelines, we are unable to display specific cosmetic treatments. However, our full range of treatments remains available.
Laser treatments for under-eye bags
ABLATIVE LASER (ALMA HYBRID, ACCLARO ULTRACLEAR and ILODA FRAXIS DUO)
This can be delivered in a fractionated setting (less downtime and faster recovery) or fully resurfacing setting (more dramatic results and longer recovery) to both help tighten and contract (plus remove) lax skin and stimulate new collagen and elastin production. Options include CO2 laser (greater collagen contraction), Hybrid (blending Erbium Glass for greater elastin response), and Cold Fibre Erbium (allowing faster recovery and stronger treatments) including in darker skin types.
Skin Tightening with RF microneedling
Radiofrequency (RF) microneedling +/- Sublative RF (CANDELA MATRIX)
RF (Radiofrequency) microneedling is used to target all involved layers. This helps firm and tighten the skin, supporting muscle plus targets the under-eye fat pads and their supporting fascia, improving the appearance of eye bags and reducing laxity and sagging in the under-eye area.
RF microneedling can be considered for prevention, through treatment of mild to moderate eyebags and skin laxity.
ULTRAFORMER MPT or Ultherapy
Ultraformer MPT delivers ultrasound energy using its Micro Pulse Technology to target the dermal layers of the skin and can be used on the delicate eye area to help firm and tighten the skin around the eyes. Lower energy settings can also target aging fat pad changes.
RF microneedling and ultrasound skin tightening are options involving a series of treatments with minimal downtime that result in a gradual tightening over 2-3 months
Other non-surgical blepharoplasty (surgical eye bag removal) options include:
THREADS: PDO thread lifting
Specially designed threads, such as i-THREAD BY XYTIDE, are an effective non-surgical option for reducing the appearance of eye bags by providing a lifting and tightening effect. These threads are placed under the skin’s collagen layer to reposition sagging tissue while stimulating collagen production, leading to firmer, smoother skin over time. With low downtime, this treatment offers a natural-looking improvement to under-eye puffiness and enhances overall skin elasticity around the eyes.
Laser Microcoring (ACCLARO ULTRACLEAR Cold Erbium Fibre Microcoring)
How laser microcoring works: microcoring removes excess fat and skin permanently and also induces new collagen production plus fat layer remodelling. This has 1-2 weeks medical downtime with skin tightening improving through 3-6 months.
Medical-Grade Skincare for daily maintenance and integrated skin treatments
Best ingredients include:
Retinol (boosts collagen), caffeine (reduces puffiness and improves circulation), Vitamin C (brightens and improves the skin’s collagen) and products with synergistic active ingredients utilized to speed recovery and improve your outcomes when applied after your laser and energy-based eye bag treatments.
While treatments can all have benefits, an individual assessment, including skin imaging, by one of our dermatologists and dermatology nurses is required. Personalized treatment recommendations will be based on your individual assessment, including skin type, severity, desired results and downtime preferences, a holistic approach and consideration of potential risks including rare complications.
