What causes jowls to form?

Jowls and sagging skin typically develop with age, particularly in post-menopausal women who experience a sudden and significant loss of collagen in the first five years of menopause. Alongside collagen loss, several other age-related changes contribute to the formation of jowls, including:
- Loss of skin elasticity.
- Loosening of soft tissue structures such as ligaments and fascia.
- Loss of facial fat, especially from the deep lifting facial (cheek) fat pads.
- Bone loss in structural areas of the face and neck (cheeks, central face and jawline).
While ageing and genetics play a major role, lifestyle factors such as smoking, vaping, excessive UV exposure (possibly also infrared) and fluctuations in body weight can accelerate their formation.
How to lift Jowls without surgery and best non-surgical facelift!
Combination treatments often work best for addressing established jowls, as no single treatment can address the multiple factors contributing to their development. In severe cases, surgical intervention may be recommended, but non-surgical options can provide significant improvements for mild to moderate sagging and with a series of new advanced dermatology treatment options good improvement can be achieved in more severe cases. These new advanced options also work as early intervention or prevention.
Skin Tightening Treatments
- CO2 and Erbium ablative lasers for skin tightening:
Our ALMA HYBRID, ILODA FRAXIS DUO, ACCLARO ULTRACLEAR are fractionated (and fully ablative) ablative lasers and Hybrid treatments for skin tightening. They are the gold standard for repairing age and sun-damaged skin. With laser choice tailored to your problem areas (e.g. erbium for around the mouth and CO2 the eyes), skin type (ACCLARO ULTRACLEAR is suitable for all skin types including darker skin types) and tolerance of downtime (faster healing with cold erbium fibre and hybrid technology).
- Radiofrequency (RF)
Radiofrequency (RF) microneedling + Monopolar RF (CANDELA MATRIX).
- Face tightening with HiFU
Ultherapy or ULTRAFORMER MPT uses ultrasound energy to tighten skin and its underlying support structures.
- Uses
These treatments can all help lift and tighten lax skin by producing immediate collagen contraction and promoting long-term remodelling of collagen and elastin. They can also be utilized to target and remove unwanted fat (e.g. double chin or jowl areas).
Targeting the 3 key areas responsible for facial sagging that occurs with aging (due to both loss of support and volume loss). The upper, middle and lower face all need to be assessed regarding their contribution to sagging.
Sagging is due to loss of underlying bone, stretching of the skin and/or retaining ligaments, and fat volume loss.
Facial Contouring and Volume Enhancement can be used to mitigate facial sagging:
- In the upper face, treating temple changes can also lift a drooping eyebrow and eyelid.
- In the mid face the pyriform fossa (located deep to the nose) supports and lifts the skin around and adjacent to the mouth.
- In the lower face addressing jaw bone loss in front of the ear, +/- the chin, can restore not only a more snatched jawline but also improve the appearance of loose neck skin and jowls.
- These areas can all be targeted by advanced dermatologic cosmetic treatments.
In line with the latest TGA guidelines, we are unable to display specific cosmetic treatments. However, our full range of treatments remains available.
Microcoring (ACCLARO ULTRACLEAR)
A cutting edge alternative to face and neck lift surgery.
- Laser(cold erbium fibre) microcoring, using the ACCLARO ULTRACLEAR removes tiny cores of skin that heal without scars. The fractional pattern allows targeting of problem areas and use of vectors to lift loose sagging skin without surgery. With healing, there is natural skin contraction, new collagen formation and progressive tightening, without requiring surgical excision.
- This process removes excess skin, lifts sagging areas, and promotes collagen remodelling for firmer, rejuvenated skin without surgery.
- Fully ablative resurfacing is also available and is the best laser setting for skin tightening: suitable for prevention, mild to moderate sagging jowls and double chin, in combination with other energy based devices, or a series of treatments for more severe sagging – a full cosmetic consult is required prior to scheduling an appointment for this particular treatment.
Targeted Subcutaneous Fat Removal (lift jowls and/or double chin without surgery).
- KDAA have several cosmetic, laser, ultrasound, and radiofrequency-based treatments to target localised areas of unwanted fat. Carefully selected settings on CANDELA MATRIX Radiofrequency (RF) microneedling and Ultherapy or ULTRAFORMER MPT devices can, for example, be used to target and destroy unwanted fat (jowls and double chin), coupled with settings to simultaneously tighten and address lax, sagging skin.
Threads (i-THREAD BY XYTIDE) – PDO thread lift for jowls.
- Threads are a minimally invasive treatment designed to lift sagging skin and redefine facial contours.
- i-Thread is inserted under the skin to provide an immediate lifting effect while stimulating collagen production over time.
Fat Targeting Cosmetic Treatments.
- Specifically designed cosmetic treatments to target and reduce submental fat, can improve jowls caused by excess fat.
- In line with the latest TGA guidelines, we are unable to display specific cosmetic treatments. However, our full range of treatments remains available.
