Stretch Marks

Stretch marks, or striae, are a common form of skin scarring that occurs when the skin is stretched rapidly, such as during periods of rapid growth, weight gain, pregnancy, or due to certain medical conditions. When the skin is overstretched, the underlying connective tissue (primarily collagen and elastin fibres) is disrupted, leading to the formation of these marks. Initially, stretch marks often appear red or purple due to blood vessels showing through the skin's thin layers. Over time, they can fade to a lighter, whitish colour as the blood vessels contract and the marks mature.

Treatments

Pulse Dye Laser (Candela V BEAM):

Pulse dye laser is the treatment of choice for new or recent stretchmarks which are red in colour. This laser treatment can reduce redness by targeting the blood vessels within the stretchmarks. Pulse dye laser also promotes dermal repair and remodelling by stimulating collagen production in the treated area.

Ablative and Non-Ablative Fractionated Lasers (ALMA Hybrid, Candela Nordlys, Ultraclear):

For older stretchmarks, ablative and non-ablative lasers are commonly used to improve the appearance of stretchmarks due to their skin resurfacing and collagen stimulating abilities. These laser treatments target the skin’s deeper layers to promote and stimulate collagen production to remodel scar tissue and stretchmarks improving their appearance.

Radiofrequency Microneedling and Sublative Radiofrequency (Candela Matrix):

These treatments utilise radiofrequency energy to help contract the skin and scar or stretch mark, reduce the visibility of stretch marks, and promote collagen remodelling. These treatments are particularly effective at producing elastin, which is essential for improving the skin’s elasticity and texture.

Rejuran:

To further enhance the benefits of these treatments, they can be combined with injectable skin healers like Rejuran scar. This product provides a matrix or scaffold that supports skin repair and regeneration, assisting in the remodelling of the skin.

The best approach to treatment of stretchmarks is through the combination of skincare, laser therapies and injectables. Choice of treatment is tailored to a person’s skin type, stretch mark location and its clinical features and tolerance of recovery or downtime.
